Liminal Mirror

2024

Passaggio specchiante is a site-specific installation conceived for Peccioli, located at Palazzo Pescatori, an ancient building in the historic center of Peccioli. The palace gets its current name from the family who lived there for nearly two centuries, up until 2019, when the wife of the last family member passed away. The building, painted pink, has three floors, a rectangular layout, and stands out in the urban landscape of Peccioli’s old town because it is detached from the other houses—free on all four sides.

Passaggio specchiante reflects on the mirror as an object and as a vehicle of our image. According to curator Francesca Greco:
"To engage with a mirror means to engage with a version of ourselves that is external to us—bringing with it a series of dilemmas: Is that really me? Is that truly my image? Is what I see objective? What is certain is that we must trust the object that, more than any other, reflects us. And perhaps the real challenge is in trusting ourselves as we look into it.
Passaggio specchiante frees us from the pursuit of objectivity and instead projects us (just like a mirror does) into a strange and surreal world, where we are no longer one but many—where the mirror, as an object, mocks us, plays with us, creating images of an alternate reality. It hints that perhaps the true power of the mirror lies in its ability to invent worlds, endlessly projecting them by distorting, duplicating, and tripling them.
Engaging with the installation allows us to actively participate in this process—as individuals and as multitudes, we continuously reinvent the work. Through the passageway between the two doors of Palazzo Pescatori, what at first appears to be just a corridor transforms into a converter of elements—and the key elements, in this case, are us, the people who walk through it.
To allow this game of reflections to happen, the first step is to overcome what seems to be a wall—an obstacle, a closure, in the shape of an ellipse. Our eye is tricked into thinking the passage is blocked, but upon approaching, we realize that what seemed to be a wall is actually a door—a metaphorical one—and that the equally metaphorical act of opening it transports us into mirrored worlds."

Celo1studio is a design duo composed of Edward Raneri and Costantino Gucci.
The duo focuses on the creation of objects and installations that interact with the viewer’s perception. To achieve this, they often choose to work with reflective surfaces such as glass and mirrors—materials that influence the observer’s reflection in unexpected ways.
