Maurizio de Giovanni is the author of a successful series of novels starring Inspector Ricciardi and
of another equally famous saga, I bastardi di Pizzofalcone, a tradition of police practice set in
Naples. For this project he creates The sign of Madonna. The story, set inside the Church of San
Giorgio in Cedri, tells of an unlikely conversation between two elderly characters, Giuseppe and
Guido, about the "disappearance" of a precious painting: Madonna of Humility by Beato Angelico.
“They are very different from one other, the two elderly men. One stands straight, composed,
pulled-back grey hair and horn glasses, hands in his lap. The other one is a bit bowed, white hair
messy on the nape of the neck and the shoulders, wearing a kind of dark cloak. His hands tremble a
little (...) ". Corsini's installation is an invitation to reflect on the diachronic paradox staged by the
writer.
Vittorio Corsini: Synchronic is the story of two periods that happen at the same time, a ghostly
story, as suggested by the iridescent and unpredictable shape and colour of the bench, in total
contrast with the dark and baroque aspect of the church.
Tiziano Scarpa: "There is a plastic bench, deliberately out of context: we burst in, having nothing to
do with these past worlds, to assert our impertinent expectations of convenience, of comfort".
Pietro Gaglianò: "Another impossible conversation comes to life in the church of San Giorgio in
Cedri. Here again, the crux is the absence: the one of Madonna of humility, attributed to Beato
Angelico, which in the last century was taken from the counter-façade in the church to the Museum
of San Matteo in Pisa. The words of the painter flow from the pen of Maurizio de Giovanni:
centuries later, the painter faces the spectre of another artist, author of the twentieth-century war
memorial, in the square in front. The two can be imagined on the bench that Corsini created with a
ghostly profile, almost as if it were also an apparition; with his back to the altar, he turns towards
the ancient location of the missing painting. The fantasised words in the mouth of Beato Angelico,
who regrets the "deportation" of his work, provide the key to the interpretation of all the work done
by Corsini, by the writers and the writers of Voices: "a work is alive inside the place for which it
was created ".
